Garmin GPS 76scx discontinued.

By KiwiTony | Wed, 16/02/2011 - 05:28

After an expensive exercise I have found out that the Garmin 76scx is no longer supplied from Garmin. I have not confirmed this with Garmin but it is no longer available on their website and other websites are saying it is discontinued and to go for the 78. I purchased the 78sc thinking it would all be ok but have since found that GPS dump will not work with it.
There are not many 76scx's left so if you need one you dont have much time.
If this is confirmed then there is going to be a big problem for new pilots who want to fly comps.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

GPS - Is it worth getting an in-built Barometer?

By Nigel Gilchrist | Thu, 09/09/2010 - 13:16

Does anyone have any opinions on whether it is worth getting a GPS model that has the in-built Barometric Sensor? There seems to be arguements for and against. With the advantage obviously being more accurate altitude readings than with just GPS and against being the additional cost, decreased battery life and apparent redundancy given we fly with a Vario anyway.

What do most people in our club have?

I was looking at the Garmin 76CSX but it is now discontinued and not readily available. The upgrade is the 78 series.

If anyone can provide some additional guidance that would be great.

I am creating a book here to hold all information relating to the use of GPS units for navigation. There will be links to tutorials on how to upload waypoints and download tracklogs as well as manuals for popular models.
